Hangs ("we," "us," or "our") is a social coordination app that helps friend groups find time to see each other. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the controls you have over it.
We built Hangs on a privacy-first foundation. Your calendar, contacts, and budget preferences are used only to help you make plans with your friends — never sold, never shared beyond that purpose.
Account information. When you sign up, we collect your name and email address.
Phone number (optional). You may add and verify a phone number during or after onboarding. Verification is handled by Firebase Phone Authentication, which sends a one-time SMS code to confirm the number is yours. Once verified, two things happen: your raw phone number is stored in your account record (visible to you in Settings, never to other users), and a SHA-256 hash of your normalized phone number is written to a private discovery index on our servers. When another Hangs user grants contacts access, their app hashes the numbers in their address book and checks for matches in this index — letting them discover you without us ever seeing whose number belongs to whom. Your phone number is never displayed to other users, never used for marketing, and never shared with third parties.
Calendar data (free/busy windows only). With your permission, Hangs reads your iOS calendar — including accounts you've connected to iOS such as Google Calendar and Outlook — to determine when you are free or busy. We extract time blocks only. We never access, store, or transmit your event titles, descriptions, attendees, or any other event details. What leaves your device is a list of time intervals: "this person is busy from 2 pm to 4 pm on Saturday." Nothing more.
Contacts (for finding friends). If you grant contacts access, Hangs reads your address book to identify which of your contacts are already on Hangs, and to be notified when future contacts join. Here is exactly what happens and what stays on your device:
Interests. During onboarding you select activity categories you enjoy (e.g., Restaurants, Live Music, Hockey). These are used to personalize hang suggestions. They are visible to you and used by our matching engine; they are not sold or shared with third parties.
Budget preference. You may optionally set a private budget preference (e.g., under $25 / $25–$75 / $75+ / Flexible). This is used only to filter suggestions for you and is never visible to other users — not even members of your groups.
Location. If you opt in to location features, Hangs accesses your approximate city-level location to determine whether you are local or travelling. Your exact location is never stored or shared. Other group members see only "in town" or "out of town" — never your city name or coordinates.
Hang history. When you mark a hang as complete, we log the date, group, and activity type. You may optionally add a note or photo. This data is private to your group and is used to track how long it has been since your group last saw each other.
Usage data. We collect anonymized analytics events (e.g., "hang proposed," "RSVP sent," "notification tapped") via Firebase Analytics. These events do not contain personal information and are used to understand how features are being used so we can improve the app.
Push notification token. We store a device push token provided by Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver notifications to your device.
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not sell your data. We do not share personal information with third parties except as described in Section 4.
Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore) on servers in the United States. The following is stored per user account in our database:
Budget preference is stored locally on your device and synced to your account. It is not visible to any other user.

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account, which permanently removes your profile, availability windows, hang history, and group memberships from our database. Anonymized analytics data may be retained for longer periods in aggregate form.
Nudge signals (your "open to hang" status) expire automatically after 7 days regardless of account status.
Hangs is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

California residents: We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. You may submit a CCPA request by contacting us below.
We use Firebase's built-in security rules to ensure each user can access only their own data and the group data they are a member of. Data is transmitted over HTTPS. No security system is perfect, and we encourage you to use a strong Apple ID password and keep your device updated.
We may update this policy as Hangs adds new features. When we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
